Mini nubians

why mini nubians?

Miniature Nubians were developed by crossing Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats with a standard size Nubian.  The resulting cross is then selectively bred for Nubian characteristics.  Of all the dairy breeds, Nigerian Dwarfs have the highest butterfat content but their production is among the lowest.  Nubians, while among the better producing dairy breeds, can grow very large with the bucks being especially difficult to handle.

When Nigerian Dwarfs are crossed with the better producing Nubian breed, known also for their high butterfat, the result is a high producing, low input, easy to handle miniature dairy goat with excellent tasting milk.  Not only are Miniature Nubians a wonderfully practical goat for the small family homestead, their kids are absolutely ADORABLE!

why us?

Only our best animals are selected as breeding stock and offered for sale. Our breeders have been selected primarily for their capacious udders, soft and correctly placed teats (with an ideal size for hand-milking) and large orifices.  Animals that do not produce good tasting milk (under ideal conditions) are removed from our breeding program.  While milk characteristics are paramount, we do often have moon spotted, splashy and blue-eyed kids available.  Our bloodlines include Green Gables and Goat Trails (who share our emphasis on milk traits).

Routine worming is one of the worst things that has ever happened to the goat industry.  This practice has led to the creation of super-parasites that are resistant to chemical wormers.  Here at O Happy Day Farm, we only worm the specific animal that needs it and only when they need it.  Before introducing any chemicals, we use heavily concentrated garlic and herbs which we've found to be effective at reducing the worm load in a strong animal.  If FAMACHA scores, body condition and stool indicate the possible presence of parasites and natural methods have failed, then (and only then) will we use chemical wormers. Goats who require constant medical care and chemical worming will often pass this on to their offspring.  For this reason, we remove these animals from our breeding program.  The result, over many generations, is a more resilient and naturally healthy animal that is well-suited for the moist, hot Central Texas climate where parasites can wreak havoc in a goat herd.

Our herd has been tested and is free of CL, CAE and Johnes Disease.

All of our goats are registered with the Miniature Dairy Goat Association.
